Why monitor for a full week?
Some heart rhythm abnormalities happen only once or twice a week. If your palpitations or dizzy spells do not occur every single day, a standard 24-hour test might easily miss them.
A 7-day Holter monitor records your heart's electrical signals continuously for seven days and nights. This increases the chances of capturing an irregular rhythm while you carry out your normal weekly work, leisure, and sleep routines.
When a week-long recording may be useful
Your doctor may recommend a 7-day recording if:
- You experience palpitations, lightheadedness, or blackouts every few days
- A previous 24-hour monitor came back normal because symptoms didn't happen on that particular day
- They need to assess how often episodes of atrial fibrillation (AF) occur over a broader timeframe
- They are monitoring the effectiveness of a new heart medication over several days
Logging events with a symptom diary
A symptom diary is just as critical as the recording itself. Whenever you experience an episode, make a note of the exact time, what you were feeling, and what you were doing. Even if your heart rhythm turns out to be normal during a flutter, that is still useful information for your doctor.

What happens during the appointment
- Fitting:
Our technician will place adhesive electrodes on your chest, connect the lightweight monitor, and test the signal. - Showering instructions:
Unlike the 24-hour monitor, you can take this monitor off to shower or bathe. Our technician will provide spare patches and demonstrate how easy it is to unclip the recorder, shower, dry your skin thoroughly, and put on new patches. - Daily life:
Wear the monitor day and night underneath your everyday clothes. If your job involves heavy physical activity or moisture, let the technician know so they can secure the patches with extra medical tape.
If you've been referred to Heartscope
Seven-day Holter monitoring at Heartscope starts with a referral from your GP or specialist. Have your referral handy when you confirm the appointment. The clinic will check the test, location and preparation with you.
Fees
This test is privately billed at $250. You pay the full fee at your appointment. For eligible Medicare cardholders, Medicare usually pays the rebate back within a couple of days, which leaves $79.50 out of pocket. You'll also need to pay a $50 equipment deposit, which is refunded when you return the monitor in good condition. For the latest fees, see the page for your clinic under Our Locations.
What happens after you return the monitor
Our cardiac team will extract and analyse the full 7-day recording, and cross-reference every diary entry against your ECG report. A comprehensive report is then sent directly to your referring doctor, who will discuss the findings and recommend appropriate next steps.
Preparing for the appointment
Before the fitting appointment
- Skin care: Please do not apply oils, body lotions, or moisturisers to your chest on the morning of your fitting.
- Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing with a separate top and bottom.
- Medications: Continue all regular prescription medications as normal.
- Security deposit: Please bring a $50 refundable equipment deposit (cash or card) to your appointment.
Please note that only 1 person will be allowed into the appointment room due to space constraints. Family, children, guardians, friends and carers will only be allowed in if it's absolutely necessary. A language interpreter can come in with you.
During the week
- You can take the monitor off to shower or bathe when you need to. At the appointment, our technician will give you extra electrodes and show you how to put them back on afterwards.
After the week
- After the 7 days have passed, please take the monitor off, put it back in the pouch with your diary, and return it to the clinic the same day.
- Once you bring the monitor back to the clinic, your $50 security deposit will be refunded immediately upon safe return of the device.

Does Heartscope provide seven-day Holter monitoring?
Yes. Heartscope provides seven-day ECG Holter monitoring by referral. The clinic will confirm the device, fitting instructions and return details for your appointment.
Why seven days rather than 24 hours?
A longer recording gives more chance of capturing a rhythm that comes and goes. Your doctor will decide how long to record based on how often your symptoms happen and what earlier tests have shown.
Can I remove it for a shower?
Yes. You can unclip the device and remove the chest patches to shower. Our technician will supply you with extra patches and show you exactly how to reapply them.
Do I need to record symptoms every time?
Yes. Record relevant episodes as instructed, even if they seem similar. When they happen, how long they last and what you were doing can help the cardiologist understand the pattern.
Can I exercise with it on?
Light exercise and regular daily routines are encouraged. If you participate in activities involving heavy sweating, contact sports, or swimming, discuss this with our technician at your fitting.
