What does an ECG measure?
An electrocardiogram (ECG) measures and records the natural electrical impulses that coordinate every single heartbeat. The resulting graph shows your doctor:
- How fast your heart is beating (heart rate).
- Whether your heart beats in a steady, regular pattern (heart rhythm).
- How smoothly electrical signals travel through each chamber of the heart.
A standard resting ECG uses 10 small adhesive patches (electrodes) placed on your chest, arms, and legs to create 12 distinct electrical viewpoints - known as "leads." The electrodes detect natural electrical signals through your skin and they do not transmit any electricity into your body.
Why your doctor may request an ECG
An ECG is one of the most common baseline heart checks. Your GP or specialist may order one to investigate:
- Heart flutters, pounding, or skipped beats (palpitations)
- Unexplained dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting episodes
- Mild chest discomfort or breathlessness
- The effects of new or existing heart medications
It can identify rhythm irregularities such as atrial fibrillation (AF), reveal delays in electrical conduction (heart blocks), and offer clues about past heart strain.
What a resting ECG can and cannot show
Because an ECG records your heartbeat for only a few brief moments while you lie still, it might look completely normal if your symptoms come and go intermittently. A normal ECG also does not automatically exclude all forms of heart disease. If your symptoms are sporadic, your doctor may recommend a wearable Holter monitor or HeartBug to track your heart over several days or weeks.

What happens during the appointment
- Preparation:
You will go inside a private room and be asked to remove your top and expose your lower legs and wrists so the technician can place the electrodes. A clean sheet or towel is provided for your privacy. - Attaching the patches:
The technician will gently wipe your skin. Small areas of chest hair may be trimmed to ensure the sticky patches stay firmly in contact. Ten adhesive patches are placed on your chest, arms, and legs, and connected to the recording machine with lightweight leads. - The recording:
You will lie still and relax on an examination bed for a minute or two, breathing normally without speaking. Moving, talking, or shivering can create static on the trace. - Wrap up:
Once the recording is checked for clarity, the patches are removed and you can get dressed immediately.

Fees
An ECG is privately billed at $40. You pay the full fee at your appointment. For eligible Medicare cardholders, Medicare usually pays the rebate back within a couple of days, which leaves $8.20 out of pocket. The clinic will confirm the amount before your visit. Discussing the result with your doctor
After the test, a cardiologist will interpret your ECG tracing, and a formal report is sent directly to your referring doctor. Your doctor will discuss what the findings mean for your overall health and advise if any treatment or additional monitoring is needed.
Preparing for the appointment
- Medications and diet: Eat, drink, and take your regular medications normally.
- Clothing: Wear a separate top and bottom (avoid one-piece suits or dresses) so our technician can easily attach sensors to your chest, wrists, and ankles.
- Skin products: Avoid using oily body lotions, moisturisers, or perfumes on your chest or limbs on the day of the test.
- Allergies: Tell the technician if you have sensitive skin or known allergies to medical adhesives.
Please note that only 1 person will be allowed into the appointment room due to space constraints. Family, children, guardians, friends and carers will only be allowed in if it's absolutely necessary. A language interpreter can come in with you.

Does Heartscope perform ECGs?

Why are there ten electrodes for a 12-lead ECG?
The machine compares electrical signals between the electrodes in different combinations, which gives twelve views of the heart's electrical activity. Six electrodes sit on the chest and four on the limbs or their usual recording positions.
Will I feel an electrical shock?
No. The electrodes do not give off any electricity. They act purely as sensitive sensors that passively detect the tiny electrical pulses your heart generates on its own.
Can an ECG explain symptoms that have already stopped?
Sometimes it shows a relevant electrical pattern even between episodes, but it can miss a rhythm problem that isn't present during the recording. Tell your doctor when your symptoms happen and how long they last, as that helps them decide whether you need longer monitoring.
Can a watch recording replace this test?
While smartwatches can be helpful for catching heart flutters when they happen, they only capture a single electrical view (Lead I). A clinical 12-lead ECG provides a much more detailed, multi-dimensional view of your heart's electrical health.
