What is HeartBug?
HeartBug is an ultra-compact, wireless ECG event monitor worn directly on your chest for anywhere from 7 to 28 days, as prescribed by your doctor. It is designed for people whose symptoms occur irregularly or weeks apart which are difficult to capture on shorter tests.
The device monitors your rhythm while you wear it and can save recordings when it detects certain changes. You can also use the phone app to make a recording and describe symptoms as they happen. These recordings help the reporting clinician compare what you felt with your heart rhythm at the time.
The data is securely transmitted so a reporting clinician can evaluate your heart rhythm during the exact moments you felt unwell.
Why your doctor may choose longer monitoring
Palpitations, dizziness or an unexplained faint may happen only occasionally. Recording over several weeks gives more chance of capturing a relevant episode. HeartBug may also be requested to look for a rhythm problem that comes and goes, such as atrial fibrillation, including in selected people being assessed after a stroke.
HeartBug is an event-monitoring system. It can capture ECG episodes over a longer period, whether it detects them automatically or you record them when you have symptoms.
If episodes are very infrequent, your doctor may discuss other options, including an implantable loop recorder. That device is fitted in hospital and has a different purpose and monitoring period.

What happens during the appointment
Getting started
Staff will attach the adhesive electrodes and connect the monitor, then help you set up the HeartBug app on a compatible iPhone or Android phone. You'll be shown how to check the connection, request help and make a symptom recording.
Keep the phone charged and the app running as instructed. Tell the clinic before fitting if you don't have access to a suitable phone or think you'll have trouble using the app.
When you notice symptoms
Open the app, select “Make a Recording” and choose or describe what you felt. If relevant, note what you were doing and the circumstances. Your symptom entry helps the clinician interpret the ECG, so they aren't relying only on the rhythm the device detects.
Keep wearing the monitor during sleep and when you feel well, as instructed. Some rhythm changes cause no noticeable symptoms, so only putting it on when an episode starts may miss useful information.
Showering and skin care
Follow the instructions that come with your device. You can shower with HeartBug attached. Avoid scrubbing the patches and pat them dry afterwards. Take the monitor off for swimming or a bath, because it doesn't record reliably under water.

HeartBug monitoring begins with a referral from your GP or specialist. Have your referral ready when booking so we can confirm the recommended duration and setup requirements.
Fees
HeartBug monitoring is privately billed at $150. Before fitting, the clinic will confirm the prescribed monitoring period. For the latest fees, see the page for your clinic under Our Locations.
Finishing the recording and getting the report
HeartBug's cardiac team will review your transmissions and generate a comprehensive diagnostic report for your referring doctor. Your doctor will discuss the findings with you to confirm whether your symptoms are heart-related and plan your ongoing care.
Preparing for the appointment
Before the fitting appointment
- Shower before you arrive: Once your HeartBug patches are applied, you must wait 8 hours before showering or sweating to allow the adhesive to bond firmly to your skin.
- Skin preparation: Please do not apply moisturiser, oils, sunscreen, or perfume to your chest on the day of your appointment.
- Fully charged smartphone: Bring your compatible iPhone or Android phone fully charged. Our technician will help you install and pair the HeartBug app.
- Medications: Take your regular medications as usual.
Please note that only 1 person will be allowed into the appointment room due to space constraints. Family, children, guardians, friends and carers will only be allowed in if it's absolutely necessary. A language interpreter can come in with you.
While wearing the HeartBug
- Keep the HeartBug on the whole time, including in the shower and in bed.
- With the device in place, you can continue with most of your daily routines. You can shower with the device on as the HeartBug and stickers are all waterproof.
- Keep the HeartBug app running on your phone and keep your phone charged.
- If you feel your symptoms, open the app and tap "Make a Recording".
- Keep your spare stickers and the return envelope in a safe place, as you will need both. If a sticker falls off, please replace it with a new one.

After the monitoring period
When you have finished using the HeartBug:
- Place the HeartBug device and leads into the prepaid reply paid envelope provided.
- Seal the envelope securely.
- Drop it into any red Australia Post mailbox.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Heartscope provide HeartBug monitoring?
Yes. Heartscope provides HeartBug monitoring by referral. The clinic will confirm the requested duration, fitting arrangements, app requirements and return instructions for your appointment.
Does HeartBug record every heartbeat for the whole month?
No. HeartBug is an "event monitor." It continuously monitors your rhythm in the background, but only saves and transmits recordings when it spots an irregular pattern or when you tap "Make a Recording" in the app.
Can I shower while wearing it?
Yes. After waiting 8 hours following your initial fitting, you can shower normally with the monitor attached. Just avoid soaking in baths or swimming pools.
What if I don't have a smartphone?
Please inform our clinic when booking. Because the smartphone app is central to operating HeartBug, our team will confirm whether an alternative monitoring solution (such as a multi-day Holter) is more suitable.
Will HeartBug call an ambulance if it detects a problem?
No. HeartBug isn't an emergency service. If you develop severe or concerning symptoms, seek medical help immediately rather than waiting for a recording to be reviewed.
